One of the biggest changes on the Internet since its inception decades ago will now come true. Starting today, January 12, the agency responsible for the management of Internet domain names ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers), opens new domain registration in a variety never seen before.
Since this date, any person or company can register any word as an extension of a web page.
At present there are about 22 types of first tier domains such as .com or .org, as well as country codes like .es for Spain. The companies believe that enough is enough, and 40 large corporations such as Coca Cola, have complained that with the expansion of the domain it has raised costs and increased the risk of fraud and impersonation.According to the website of El Mundo, the launch of the so-called points of brand is the last major change in the strict rules governing the naming of the Internet since the launch .com in 1985. The most recent change came last year when .xxx was created to give adult websites their own space on the Internet.
However, this change brings customization of web pages to a new level. Thus, many brands and institutions see this move has many possibilities, but others see problems of phishing and protecting brands that could cost them millions.
