Reproducing sciencie fiction technology

By Mariana Sea

A team from the Human Media Lab at Queen's University in Canada, led by Dr. Roel Vertegaal, has developed a holographic videoconferencing system real size and in three dimensions named TeleHuman which consists of six motion sensors Xbox 360, a 3D projector and a convex mirror.

The device comprises an acrylic cylinder of 1.8 m, with six Kinect motion sensors in the top and a projector at the base, which duplicates the three dimensional image of the dialogador. The 360-degree screen allows the user to view the issuer from all points of view, recreating his presence there. The sensors are responsible for detecting movements of the person on the move within the container so that the projector can reproduce the image of the caller back, side, and front or where the person moves.

Dr. Vertegaal says that after substantial changes to circulation, the device could be commercially available within five years at a price of $ 5,000.

One of the new technologies added to this device is Smart Stay, which allows the phone to know that the user is watching the screen to focus on the application you are using and at the same time, it helps you navigate through music, digital books etc. . As long as the eye of the user is on the screen, this will stay on. It brings an accessory that enables you to connect to any external video source to transfer multimedia data.

Another innovative application is a voice management system that recognizes a total of 8 languages, including English, German, Italian, Korean, French and "Latin American" Spanish. Through this function the user can sort the start of different applications, taking pictures, reviewing the agenda, the registration of an email or check the weather in any city.

The iPaviment or smart pavement will be produced in Spain by the consortium organized by Smart Way since June 2012. From Spain it will be exported to Europe, USA and other Arab countries. It will be internationally present in Dubai during The International Building & Construction Show.

The iPaviment is an intelligent system that will pave streets, plazas and other areas with technology that integrates sensors, apps and operating systems like Viacities OS offering city and public transport maps, entertainment, virtual libraries, regional promotion, Internet access, vital information about city events, etc.

This information may be obtained through a wireless Wi-Fi network, Bluetooth messaging to cell phones, tablets and other devices. The Smart Way Company said that its production will remain in Spain. The technology used is presented in two formats, Classic and accessible or podotáctil, the latter for use by blind or limited visibility people.

The producer has also thought of interoperability between cities complying with the rules of the new international "Intelligent Environments Pavement Standard" for public authorities in each city to incorporate smart pavement service guarantees, supply, maintenance and connection with other locations.

Other applications will also be added to iPaviment like vibration and temperature sensors to control the standard occupancy of public streets, vibration, and noise and also to coordinate with municipal services in case of alerts or freezes. One of the most interesting applications of the intelligent pavement will be Via Book, the first library in the pavement that is intended to facilitate the promotion of cultural and local books and the different distribution of digital productions.

Via Maps is also the name of another application designed for tourists where they can access a catalog with maps available with references to food, heritage and culture. Via Sound is an application that will be used to play music or disclose events that take place in the city. Via Cupons is an application that will enable the use of promotional coupons at various locations around the city.

A major application will be MS-Alert, an intelligent warning system which alerts via Bluetooth on any accident or inconvenience along the street or avenue to prevent incidents in the streets for deterioration or due to traffic accidents.
